What to Look For When Buying
GPS enabled — non-negotiable. A PLB without GPS can still locate you via Doppler positioning but it is significantly slower and less precise. All modern PLBs include GPS as standard — if you find one without it, walk away.
Buoyancy — a PLB that sinks in the water is useless. Look for a PLB that is inherently buoyant or comes with a flotation collar. If you end up in the water your PLB needs to float antenna-up to transmit properly.
Size and weight — the best PLB is the one you actually have with you. A compact, lightweight unit that clips to your lifejacket means you will always have it. A bulky unit that stays in the grab bag because it is inconvenient is no use if you go overboard alone.
Battery life — PLBs transmit for a minimum of 24 hours. Check the standby battery expiry date on the unit — typically 5 to 7 years. Note the date and replace before it expires.
AIS capability — newer PLBs include AIS which alerts nearby vessels within VHF range immediately, potentially cutting rescue time significantly before coastguard even arrives. Most PLBs require you to extend the antenna, remove a cover or guard, and press the activation button. Each model is slightly different — read the instructions before you need it. Practice the sequence without actually activating it. admittedly, I have only practiced at training centres and on commercial vessels.
Do I need a PLB if I already have an EPIRB?
They serve different purposes. An EPIRB stays with the vessel. A PLB stays with you. If you go overboard and the vessel drifts away from you, the EPIRB goes with the vessel — not with you. For offshore work, having both is the sensible answer.
Are there false activations with PLBs?
Accidental activations do happen — usually caused by water ingress triggering the device or incorrect handling. All PLBs have a self-test mode for testing without transmitting a real distress signal. A false activation is a criminal offence in the UK and wastes coastguard resources. Store your PLB correctly and use the self-test function rather than accidentally activating it.
Can I use a UK registered PLB abroad?
Yes. PLBs work globally. When you register yours, provide emergency contact details of someone who will know your location — this helps rescue authorities confirm a genuine distress and speeds up response.
