There are dozens of VHF marine radios available and the specifications can make a simple decision feel complicated. Here is everything that actually matters, stripped of jargon.
Step 1 — Fixed or Handheld?
This is the first decision and it shapes everything else.
Fixed VHF radio — permanently mounted on the vessel, wired to the power supply and antenna, connects to your GPS chartplotter. Transmits at 25 watts — the maximum allowed. Full DSC capability. The primary radio on any serious vessel.
Handheld VHF radio — battery powered, portable, typically 5 to 6 watts. No installation required. Used as a primary radio on smaller vessels or as a backup to a fixed set. Useful when working on deck away from the chart table.
The rule: If you have a dedicated vessel and want proper safety communications — install a fixed radio. If you are starting out, sailing occasionally, or want a backup — buy a quality handheld first.
Step 2 — Do You Need DSC?
Yes. Always. DSC — Digital Selective Calling — is the feature that sends an automatic distress alert with your GPS position at the press of a single red button. Without DSC you have to make a voice Mayday call. With DSC the coastguard knows exactly who you are and where you are within seconds of you pressing one button.
All modern VHF radios have DSC. For DSC to work correctly your radio needs to have an MMSI number programmed into it and ideally be connected to GPS. Without GPS the distress alert goes out without your position — significantly less useful.
Step 3 — Do You Need AIS?
AIS — Automatic Identification System — is separate from VHF communication but increasingly available as an integrated feature on VHF radios.
A VHF radio with an integrated AIS receiver displays nearby vessels on your chartplotter without needing a separate AIS unit. This is a genuine safety feature — you can see commercial shipping around you before it is visible to the eye, particularly useful at night and in poor visibility.
A VHF radio with integrated AIS transmit capability both receives other vessels and broadcasts your own position. This is the most capable option.
AIS integration adds cost but for anyone doing coastal or offshore sailing it is worth serious consideration.
Step 4 — Power Output
Fixed radios — 25 watts. This is the legal maximum and the standard across all fixed marine VHF radios. No decisions to make here.
Handheld radios — look for 6 watts. Some budget handhelds offer only 1 or 2 watts. The difference in range is significant. Always buy a 6 watt handheld.
Step 5 — Waterproofing
Marine VHF radios must be genuinely waterproof. The IP rating tells you how waterproof.
IPX4 — splash proof only. Not adequate for marine use.
IPX7 — submersible to 1 metre for 30 minutes. The minimum for a handheld marine radio.
IPX8 — submersible beyond 1 metre. Better for any handheld that might end up overboard.
For handhelds — always check the IP rating before buying. Do not assume waterproof means the same thing across all products.
Step 6 — Does it Float?
For handheld radios — floating capability is worth paying extra for. A handheld that sinks if dropped overboard is significantly less useful than one that floats face up with the antenna above the waterline — still transmitting, still locatable. Step 7 — Chartplotter Integration
If you already use a specific chartplotter brand — Garmin, Simrad, Raymarine — a VHF radio from the same manufacturer will often integrate more seamlessly. DSC alerts appearing directly on your chartplotter screen, radio control from the plotter touchscreen, and shared GPS data all become possible with integrated systems.
This matters most for vessels with established navigation systems. For simpler setups it is less important.
