Essential Safety Gear for Offshore Electricians — What You Actually Need

I am an offshore electrician. Nearly two decades at sea. I have worked on oil and gas platforms, wind farms, cargo vessels, CTVs, and CSOVs. The safety gear I carry falls into two categories — the standard offshore kit that everyone wears, and the electrical-specific equipment that relates to my specific trade and its specific risks.

Here is the honest guide to both.

The Standard Offshore PPE — What You Wear Every Day

Before any electrical-specific equipment, the standard PPE requirements for working offshore apply to an electrician exactly as they do to any other offshore worker.

Hard hat — worn on deck and in working areas at all times. Some installations require it throughout the installation, others only in designated areas. Know the rules for your specific installation.

Safety boots — steel toecap, slip-resistant sole. Non-negotiable in any offshore working environment.

High visibility clothing — typically a high-vis vest or jacket, worn in all working areas and on deck.

Lifejacket — automatic inflation, minimum 275N for North Sea offshore operations in heavy PPE. Worn during transfers, on deck, and whenever specified by the safety management system.

Immersion suit — accessible and correctly sized for emergency use. On CTVs and smaller vessels, these are typically stored for immediate access rather than worn routinely.

Safety glasses — required for specific tasks involving risk of eye injury. Some installations require them throughout all working areas.

Gloves — task dependent. Not all electrical work is done with gloves — insulated gloves have their place but they reduce dexterity and are specified for particular tasks rather than worn as a default.

Electrical-Specific Safety Equipment

Beyond the standard PPE, an offshore electrician carries and uses equipment that is specific to the electrical trade and its risks.

Multifunction Tester (MFT)

The MFT is the fundamental electrical test instrument. It tests continuity, insulation resistance, earth loop impedance, and RCD operation — the tests required to verify that electrical circuits are safe before and after work. Every offshore electrician carries their own calibrated MFT. It is as fundamental to the job as the tools themselves.

I carry my own MFT. I know its calibration date, I know its condition, and I trust it. Relying on a shared or unfamiliar instrument for safety-critical testing is not a position I would put myself in.

Lock-Off System

Electrical isolation and lock-off is the most critical safety procedure in electrical work. Before working on any electrical circuit or equipment, the supply must be isolated, tested, and locked off so that it cannot be re-energised while work is in progress.

The lock-off system uses physical padlocks — typically each electrician has their own personal padlock which only they have the key for. You lock the isolation device. Nobody can remove your lock except you. You know the circuit is dead because you locked it yourself and you have the key.

Offshore installations have formal permit-to-work systems that govern electrical isolation — these are the documented, management-controlled procedures that confirm what is isolated, who has locked it, and what work is authorised. Follow the permit. Follow the isolation procedure. Do not improvise.

Communications

Strong, reliable communications are essential for an offshore electrician. You need to be able to confirm with the control room or the relevant authority that a circuit is isolated before you work on it. You need to be able to communicate any change in status — a circuit that was locked off being re-energised by someone who did not know you were working on it.

Every installation has its own communications systems — radio, telephone, PA. Know the system, use it correctly, and confirm isolation verbally as well as physically with the lock-off procedure.

HV Electrical PPE — For High Voltage Work

Standard electrician’s PPE is not adequate for high voltage work. HV work — anything above 1000V AC — requires specialist PPE rated for the voltage level, arc flash protection, insulated tools rated for the voltage, and formal authorisation as an HV-competent person.

Offshore wind farm work in particular involves HV systems — turbines operate at 33kV and above. If you are not specifically trained and authorised for HV work, you do not do HV work. This is absolute.

The One Safety Principle That Matters Most

Think about the electricity. Always. Is it off? Have I confirmed it is off? Does anyone else know I am working here?

Close electrical cubboard doors when you walk away. Someone else walking past and seeing an open panel may not know it is being worked on. They may operate something. Close it, label it, lock it.

Do not let yourself or others get hurt. The equipment is replaceable. You are not. The hierarchy of every electrical job offshore is: isolate, test, lock off, then work. Never in a different order.

I have seen people shortcut this. I have seen the consequences. The electricity does not care about schedule pressure, about what the job will cost if it is not done today, about what the client wants. It is on or it is off and the consequences of getting that wrong are severe.

FAQs

What qualifications does an offshore electrician need?
A UK offshore electrician typically holds a relevant electrical qualification — 18th Edition Wiring Regulations is the standard for UK installations — plus offshore certifications including BOSIET or FOET, STCW Basic Safety Training, and an ENG1 medical. For HV work, specific HV authorisation is required. Individual operators may specify additional requirements.

What testing equipment do offshore electricians need?
At minimum — a calibrated multifunction tester capable of performing the tests required by BS 7671 and any additional operator requirements. The MFT must be within its calibration period and appropriate for the voltage levels being tested. Additional instruments including clamp meters, voltage indicators, and proving units are carried depending on the scope of work.

Is offshore electrical work more dangerous than onshore?
The fundamental electrical hazards are the same. The additional risks offshore come from the environment — working in confined spaces on a moving vessel, working in wet and corrosive conditions, and in some cases working with HV systems that are not encountered in most onshore roles. These risks are managed through training, procedures, and appropriate PPE.

Electrical work offshore must only be carried out by competent, authorised persons in accordance with the installation’s permit-to-work system and applicable regulations.
