The Accessories You Actually Need
Leash — non-negotiable
The most important accessory you can buy for any SUP. If you fall off in wind or current, your board can be 50 metres away before you can swim to it. A coiled leash attaches you to the board at the ankle. On flat water and the sea — always use one. On fast-moving rivers, use a quick-release leash or no leash at all as a fixed leash can become dangerous in current.

Paddle
Most boards come with a paddle. Many come with a poor quality aluminium paddle that is heavy and inefficient. A lightweight adjustable carbon or fibreglass paddle makes a significant difference to how enjoyable paddling actually is. If the included paddle feels heavy and tiring — upgrade it.

Accessories That Are Nice But Not Essential
