CTVs — Crew Transfer Vessels — are the boats that get wind farm technicians from port to turbine and back again. I have worked on them as deckhand and engineer and it is genuinely enjoyable work. The technicians are usually great company, the job has purpose, and no two days are identical.

It is also cold, wet, and when conditions are rough, demanding work that requires your full attention. Here is an honest guide to what CTV work actually involves and what the safety considerations are.

What Is a CTV?

A Crew Transfer Vessel is a purpose-built high-speed catamaran or monohull designed specifically to transport wind farm technicians and their equipment from shore bases to offshore wind installations and back. They are typically 20 to 30 metres in length, fast — capable of 25 to 35 knots — and designed to operate in the specific conditions of the offshore wind environment.

Modern CTVs are equipped with DP systems — Dynamic Positioning — that use GPS and thrusters to hold the vessel precisely in position during the technician transfer at the turbine base. This technology is what makes the push-on transfer procedure possible in the conditions CTVs operate in.

What CTV Work Is Actually Like Day to Day

You leave port early. The technicians arrive with their kit and tool bags — sometimes a considerable amount of equipment — and you get them and their gear safely loaded and underway. The passage to the wind farm can range from 30 minutes to several hours depending on the installation location.

Your job as deckhand or engineer is to ensure the technicians and their equipment are safely delivered to and retrieved from the turbines. Everything on deck during a transit needs to be properly secured. The technicians need to be briefed on safety procedures. Equipment needs to be ready for crane operations. The vessel needs to be in the right condition for the transfer procedure.

The atmosphere is generally good. Wind farm technicians are professionals who do this every day — they know the routine, they follow the procedures, and they are usually excellent to work with. Some installations have large teams rotating out — busy, lively transits. Others are quieter. Either way the job keeps you occupied.

The Turbine Transfer — Step by Step

This is the most distinctive and specific safety procedure of wind farm work and something I have been directly involved in as deckhand and engineer on CTVs.

The technicians need to transfer from the CTV to the turbine base — a structure that is moving in the swell while the vessel is also moving. The procedure is precise and it has to be. Here is how it works:

The CTV approaches the turbine base and pushes on — holding the bow of the vessel against the landing platform using the vessel’s engines. The boat must be as stable as possible, held on the push by the skipper.

The technician clips onto the belay system at the turbine base — a safety line that is connected before they step off the vessel. and off they climb. once on the installation, we crane their tools and equipment up separately.

When the work is complete the Tools and equipment come down first. Then the technicians come down and transfer back to the vessel, The deckhand counts down the final 5 steps — five, four, three, two, one — and on the count of one shouting STEP BACK, the technician steps back onto the vessel The timing is critical.

The deck team will watch for any odd wave movements and be ready to shot STOP of something moves. They should not go onto the vessel if there is any movement. thats a non-negotiable

Safety Equipment on a CTV

The standard safety kit on a CTV includes everything you would expect on any commercial vessel plus the specific equipment for wind farm operations.

Personal PPE worn at all times on deck — lifejacket, helmet, high-vis jacket, safety boots. Even in harbour. The rule is simple: on the vessel, in harbour or at sea, you wear the PPE. There are no exceptions and no situations where it is acceptable to be on deck without it.

Harness and clip system — the specific belay clip used during transfers is not a standard safety harness clip. It is a purpose-designed system for the wind farm transfer environment. All crew and technicians must use the correct clip for the belay system on each specific installation — they vary between operators and installations.

Lifejackets are automatic inflation type, worn throughout all maritime operations. They are checked before every trip.

The CTV itself carries the standard commercial vessel safety equipment — liferafts, EPIRBs, fire suppression systems, first aid equipment, and all other MCA-required kit for commercial vessels.

Weather Limits and Storm Days

CTVs operate within defined weather limits. Typical operational limits are around 1.5 metres significant wave height — though this varies by vessel type and operator. When conditions exceed the limit, operations stop.

This is non-negotiable. No commercial pressure overrides a weather limit call. The skipper has the final say on whether conditions are suitable for operations and specifically for the transfer procedure. A turbine transfer in conditions that are at or beyond the limit is where accidents happen.

Storm days are part of the CTV working life. Accept them, use the time productively, and do not let commercial pressure — from the client or anyone else — influence a decision to operate in conditions that are not safe.

Training for CTV Crew

CTV crew in the UK typically require STCW Basic Safety Training as a minimum for maritime operations. For those working specifically in the wind farm environment, GWO Sea Survival is increasingly required — this module covers the specific procedures for offshore wind installation transfers.

MCA certification appropriate to the vessel and route is required. The skipper holds the relevant MCA certificate of competency for the vessel type and operating area.

How dangerous is the turbine transfer?

What does a typical CTV day look like?
Early start, load technicians and equipment, transit to the wind farm, complete transfers to and from turbines throughout the day, return to port. Days can be long when multiple turbines are being serviced and weather extends operations. Storm days result in no operations and the crew stands down.
