How an EPIRB Works on Land
The EPIRB transmits on 406MHz to the Cospas-Sarsat satellite network. Satellites detect the signal regardless of whether you are at sea or on land. The rescue coordination centre that receives the alert — in the UK, the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre — will coordinate an appropriate response.

The Difference Between an EPIRB and a PLB on Land
An EPIRB is registered to a vessel and is designed to be mounted on a vessel. When an EPIRB alert is received, the coastguard’s first assumption is that a vessel is in distress. They will look for that vessel.
A PLB is registered to a person. When a PLB alert is received, the rescue coordination centre knows it is a personal emergency, not a vessel emergency. The response is calibrated accordingly — mountain rescue, police, ambulance if needed on land, rather than the coastguard launching vessels and helicopters to search the sea.
For land-based emergencies — a PLB is the significantly better tool. It is smaller, lighter, designed to be carried on a person, registered to you personally, and triggers the appropriate response for a land emergency.
When Would You Use an EPIRB on Land?
There is really only one scenario where using an EPIRB on land makes sense — you are in a genuine life-threatening emergency and an EPIRB is the only distress device you have available. In that case, use it. Any signal is better than no signal.
For planned land-based activities in remote locations — take a PLB, not an EPIRB.
